Walk Through a 1,200-Year-Old Sacred Site
with a Local Guide

WHY AWESOME TOURS?

There is a side of Koyasan that only those who live here can see.

Every guide at Awesome Tours has worked at a temple in Koyasan and continues to live here today.
The path illuminated by lanterns at night, the chanting of sutras echoing before the mausoleum, and a sky full of stars above—it is precisely because we know this everyday life that we can share a world beyond what’s on the surface.
History not found in guidebooks, and the little-known details of daily life.
The atmosphere that breathes within the silence.
We’ll take you to a Koyasan that only locals know.

All our guides are Koyasan residents with experience working at local temples. They hold the Temple Grounds Guide certification issued by Kongobuji Temple. As a travel agency based at Koyasan Headquarters, we also handle corporate training and group arrangements.

Guide Your Organization’s Future at Koyasan. [Corporate Training, Executive Meetings, Group Travel]

Why not hold your training, meetings, or group trips in Koyasan?
Ideas that wouldn’t emerge in a typical conference room naturally come to life here.

3 Reasons to Choose Koyasan

① The unexpected connections between businesses and Koyasan
Many well-known companies—such as Panasonic, UCC, and ShinMaywa Industries—have erected “corporate graves” in Koyasan. It’s rare to find time to reflect on the company’s history and its predecessors. When employees visit this site together and share a sense of gratitude for the company’s history and its founders as a team, the atmosphere is lifted when they return to their daily routines.

② A place with 1,200 years of serenity becomes your meeting room
In this quiet mountain environment, you can focus entirely on the agenda at hand. We can arrange chairs, long tables, projectors, screens, and whiteboards, so there’s no need to worry about equipment.

Leave all the tedious arrangements to us
“We want to hold a training session in Koyasan, but we don’t know where to start.” In response to requests like this, we provide comprehensive support—from creating itineraries to providing quotes. Please feel free to consult us not only for corporate training but also for group tours by travel agencies and individual travel planning.

Koyasan INFO (5 Themes)

“A sacred place in the heavens—must visit at least once in a lifetime.”
Koyasan spreads across a mountain basin at an altitude of approximately 800 meters. This is a place where 1,200 years of history, abundant nature, and prayers come to life.
We have compiled useful information for your trip to Koyasan into five themes.

Kukai, In Eternal Meditation to This Day

Mount Koya is a sacred site of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism founded in 816 by Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai (774–835). In 2004, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” and was awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.
At the most sacred site, “Okunoin Gobyō,” it is believed that Kōbō Daishi continues to meditate (in a state of samadhi) even today, praying for the happiness of all people.

Is there no single peak called “Mount Kōya”?

In fact, there is no single mountain named “Mount Kōya” on any map. The entire mountain basin at an elevation of approximately 815 meters, surrounded by mountains reaching 1,000 meters in height, is collectively known as Koyasan.
With 117 temples densely packed into a flat area measuring about six kilometers east to west and three kilometers north to south, it is truly a “religious city in the sky.”

Koyasan Trivia:
Of the population of just over 2,000, it is said that about 800 are monks. You might encounter a monk for every three or four people you pass on the street.

Abundant Nature and the “Six Trees of Koya”

Koyasan possesses a unique ecosystem (the Sohayaki region) where plants from warm and cold climates intermingle. In particular, the six types of trees essential for temple construction have been carefully preserved as the “Six Trees of Koya” (Koyarikuboku).

The Six Trees: Japanese cedar (Sugi), Japanese cypress (Hinoki), Japanese umbrella pine (Koyamaki), red pine (Akamatsu), Japanese fir (Momi), and Japanese hemlock (Tsuga)

Furthermore, curiously, rain that falls on Koyasan does not flow into the nearby Kii River, but instead flows through the Odogawa River to the distant Arita River. The terrain of Koyasan is also full of mystery.

Access to Koyasan (Main Routes)

Your journey begins with a “rail trip to the heavens.”

From Osaka (Namba):
Take the Nankai Electric Railway “Limited Express Koya” to Gokuraku-bashi Station (approx. 90 min) → Cable car (approx. 5 min) → Koyasan Station.

From Kansai Airport:
Take the Nankai Electric Railway via Tengachaya Station or “Namba Station to the Koya Line.

From Tokyo or Hiroshima:
Take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka → Take the subway to Namba → Take the Nankai Electric Railway.

From the Nara/Kyoto area:
Take the JR or Kintetsu Line to Hashimoto Station, then transfer to the Nankai Koya Line.

Limited Express Koya & Cable Car
The cable car from Gokuraku-bashi Station climbs the steep slope in one go. Feel the change in the atmosphere as you ascend.

Transportation within Koyasan (3 options)
To get from Koyasan Station to the town center, you must use the bus-only road.

Local Bus (Nankai Rinkan Bus):
Buses are waiting to depart as the cable car arrives. The ride to the town takes about 10 minutes. This is the most convenient way to visit major attractions.

Taxi:
There are no taxis cruising for passengers in town, so you’ll need to catch one at the station or major parking lots or request by phone.
Aritetsu Kanko Taxi: 0736-56-2634
Koyasan Taxi: 0736-56-2628

Rental Cars:
Nico Nico Rent-a-Car: Has a branch within Koyasan (one-way rentals not available).
Toyota Rent-a-Car: Has a branch near Hashimoto Station at the foot of the mountain (one-way rentals available).

Basic Information on Temperatures:

Located at an elevation of 800 meters, Koyasan is about 6°C cooler than lowland areas.
Please prepare as if the temperatures were similar to those in Sendai or Nagano. Summers are cool, and winters bring heavy snowfall. Additionally, frequent fog is one of Koyasan’s enchanting features.

Recommended Seasons and Attire Spring (March–May):

Late Spring and Flowers Features:

The Fire Festival in March, cherry blossoms in April, and fresh greenery in May. May, especially after Golden Week, is a highly recommended time to visit as crowds have thinned and a wide variety of flowers are in bloom. Attire: It is still a bit chilly. Bring an extra layer.

Summer (June–August):

A Natural Air Conditioner Highlights:

Ideal for escaping the summer heat. Even in the height of summer, temperatures rarely exceed 30°C, and you can sleep comfortably at night without air conditioning. June offers opportunities to view fireflies and experience mist-shrouded landscapes. Clothing: Short sleeves are fine during the day, but it gets chilly in the mornings and evenings, so a light jacket is necessary.

Fall (September–November):

Blazing Autumn Foliage Features:

Mid-October to mid-November is the peak season for autumn foliage. In September, as long as you avoid typhoons, the weather is refreshing and ideal for sightseeing, much like May. Clothing: Temperatures drop rapidly. Be sure to bring a sweater or jacket.

Winter (December–February):

A Silent, Snow-Covered World Features:

With fewer tourists, this is when you can experience Koyasan at its quietest and most solemn. The snow-covered temples are breathtakingly beautiful. Clothing: Temperatures drop below freezing. Please come prepared with full winter gear, including a down jacket, gloves, and non-slip shoes.

Must-See! The Three Major Sacred Sites

Okunoin:
A 2-kilometer path leading to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi. A sanctuary within a sanctuary, lined with centuries-old cedar trees and over 200,000 gravestones.

Danjō Garan:
The site where the “Konpon Daito” (Great Fundamental Pagoda), a symbol of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, stands at nearly 50 meters tall.

Kongōbuji Temple:
The head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. The Banryū-tei rock garden, the largest in Japan, is a must-see.

Also Recommended! The Hidden Gems of Koyasan

Reihokan Museum:
Features numerous National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including calligraphy written in Kukai’s own hand.

Daimon Gate:
The main gate stands 25.1 meters tall. It’s a beautiful spot to view the sunset or the nighttime illumination.

Mani Pagoda:
Located next to Seifuku-in Temple, here you can experience fortune-telling by turning giant prayer beads and the Circuit of the Precepts, a walk through the pitch-black underground.

Enjoying Koyasan’s Cuisine

Shojin Ryori (Buddhist Vegetarian Cuisine):
Buddhist cuisine that uses no meat or fish. The famous sesame tofu and Koya tofu are exquisite.

Important Note:
Except at strictly vegetarian restaurants, dashi broth may contain bonito. Those following a vegan diet should check in advance.

Gluten-Free Options:
While shojin ryori typically uses a lot of soy sauce (which contains wheat), some facilities, such as the shukubo (temple lodging) “Eko-in,” offer gluten-free menus.

Activities: Hiking & Goshuin

Chōishi-michi & Nyonin-dō:
Walk along the ancient pilgrimage paths and experience the scenery Kūkai once saw.

Goshuin (temple stamps with handwritten calligraphy):
Available at almost all temples. The “Kōya Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage” (Honkaku-in, Eko-in, Kumagai-ji, Hozen-in, etc.) is also popular.

Extend Your Trip: Nearby Hot Springs and Sightseeing

Hot Springs:
Ryujin Onsen, one of Japan’s Three Great Beauty Springs; Yunomine Onsen, Japan’s oldest hot spring; Kawayu Onsen, featuring the winter-only Sennin-buro (Hermit’s Bath); and the secluded hot springs of Nosegawa Onsen and Yadori Onsen.

Sightseeing:
Kudoyama Town, associated with Sanada Yukimura; Niutsuhime Shrine (Katsuragi Town); and Tamaki Shrine (Totsukawa Village).

[Useful Information] ATMs, Luggage, and Etiquette Q&A

Q. Is there a place to store large luggage (suitcases)?

A. Please note: Most coin lockers within the mountain area are not large enough to accommodate large suitcases.
[Solution] Go to the Station Office at Koyasan Station.
The station office, located immediately after exiting the ticket gates, offers temporary storage for about 500 yen per item. The best approach is to leave large luggage at the station rather than bringing it into the mountain area, allowing you to sightsee unencumbered.

Q. What about money, currency exchange, and ATMs?

A. ATMs (Cash Withdrawals)
ATMs are available at Nanto Bank, Kiyo Bank, post offices, and JA branches in the downtown area (around Senjuin Bridge).

Currency Exchange:
Kiyo Bank has a currency exchange machine (7:00 AM–9:00 PM). Supported currencies include the US dollar, euro, Chinese yuan, and 8 other major currencies.

Q. What are the etiquette rules for staying at a shukubo (temple lodging)?

A. A shukubo is a temple facility and also a place of practice for monks. Please observe the following three points:

Strictly observe schedules:
Curfews, bath times, and meal times are fixed. Be sure to confirm these upon check-in.

Maintain silence:
Many buildings have thin walls. Please be considerate of your neighbors regarding the volume of late-night conversations, TV noise, etc.

Check Before Taking Photos:
Photography is prohibited in many areas, such as inside the main hall and around Buddhist statues. Please be sure to obtain permission before taking any photos.

Q. Can I fly a drone?

A. It is generally prohibited. The entire Koyasan area is the private property of Kongobuji Temple. To protect cultural properties and ensure the safety of visitors, flying drones without permission is strictly prohibited.

Q. Are shukubo the only lodging options?

A. While the traditional shukubo experience is the main focus, there are other options available. In recent years, guesthouses such as “Koyasan Guest House KOKUU” have become popular, allowing you to choose an option that suits your travel style.
